History of the Kane Street Community Garden...

The first program initiated by The Hunger Task Force, the Kane Street Community Garden was established in 1998.  Since then, over 213,000 pounds of fresh, organically grown vegetables have been distributed to La Crosse area residents.  The garden, located on the corner of Kane and Hagar Streets on the north side of La Crosse, is on land owned by the City of La Crosse.   Under the direction of the Garden Coordinator, hundreds of volunteers assist at the garden each summer with planting, weeding, and harvesting.  Why?  To distribute free, nutritious vegetables to people needing food assistance.

The Garden Coordinator...

Todd Huffman coordinates the Kane Street Garden program.  Todd began his work with The Hunger Task Force as the Coordinator of the Rotary South Community Garden, a seasonal position.  He was hired to coordinate both community gardens in 2006.  Todd has extensive experience in organic gardening.  He is a Master Gardener.  He was previously employed by Chileda in La Crosse.

Harvesting of the Kane Street Garden...

Every Monday, Thursday and Saturday afternoon during the harvest season (beginning in June), volunteers assist at the garden, picking vegetables for distribution.  You can assist with the harvest!  Come to the garden between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. (Monday and Thursday) and 10:00am - 1:00pm (Saturday), register as a volunteer, and wait for direction.  Todd, or a volunteer assistant, will provide instruction.  After harvesting is completed, volunteers are allowed to be first in line for the distribution of vegetables, but anyone coming to the garden will receive produce!  Please note: harvest nights may be cancelled if it is raining.

Community members are asked to refrain from harvesting vegetables at any other time than regularly scheduled harvest nights.

Volunteering at the Garden...

Would you like to volunteer at the Kane Street Community Garden?  Join us on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00am to 1:00pm to help harvest.  Certainly, we need volunteers daily as well.  We are there at 9:00 am every day except Sunday!

If you have a group of people that would like to volunteer, and you cannot help at regular volunteering times, call Todd Huffman at the Hunger Task Force office (386-3319) to schedule a work time.

The Kane Street Community Garden program depends on volunteers to be successful.  Please, consider helping us help others!

Mission:  To eliminate hunger by harvesting community resources and being the voice of the hungry.
